The Concept of the Trust
Fund
The Trust Fund in Support of
Actions to Eliminate Violence Against Women was established at UNIFEM in
1996 by a UN General Assembly resolution. It is a strategic part of
UNIFEM's work to eliminate violence against women.
The primary goal of the Trust
Fund is to identify and support local, national, regional and
international initiatives to prevent and eliminate violence against women.
The Trust Fund supports projects that undertake innovative actions in the
following areas:

awareness raising

capacity building
-
legal literacy
-
training
-
action related research
Examples of projects
Some example of projects are:

strategic preventive
initiatives through innovative educational campaigns

revision of laws or
regulations to respond more effectively to gender-based violence
-
training women to recognize
their rights and teaching women how to exercise their rights
-
training police officers,
judges, teachers and health workers to assist women victims of violence
-
participatory research on
violence against women involving local communities
-
raising awareness via the
media (radio, television, theatre, dance etc.)

The Women's Aid Organization will monitor the enforcement and efficacy
of the Domestic Violence Act 1994, and the delivery of services for
survivors of domestic violence. The findings will be used as an advocacy
tool to bring about changes in both the substance and the implementation
of the legislation.

Developing
a Media Code of Conduct on Gender-Fair Reporting, Regional (Cambodia,
China, India, Korea, Nepal, Philippines and Sri Lanka): building
on the Beijing Platform for Action, Isis International-Manila aims to
develop a code of conduct for the media in order to promote gender-sensitive
representation, eliminate stereotypical portrayals of women, and contribute
to the prevention of violence against women in all forms of print, broadcast
and electronic media.

The Viet Nam Women's

Combatting
Domestic Violence against Women:
the aim of the Vietnam Women's Union is to gather data on the current
situation of domestic violence in Vietnam, and build the capacity of
communities to assist women who are subjected to violence. The project
will include a campaign to raise public awareness on the severity and
urgency of the problem in Vietnam, and to ensure that women's human
rights are protected.
Duration: 2 years

The
Women's Rights Project:
to enable Burmese refugee women living in Thailand to understand their
right to be free from violence, develop their own culturally appropriate
strategies to fight violence, and educate the larger community about
the many forms of violence against women. The project aims to help women
develop the capacity to work towards eradicating violence through documentation,
publication, work with the media, and local and international advocacy.
The long-term goal is to assist Burmese women's groups to lay the foundations
for change, and provide the tools necessary to help them create a self-reliant,
active women's movement.
Duration: 6 months

Violence Against
Women in Mongolia : The National CEDAW Watch
Network Centre will advocate for the approval of draft legislation on
domestic violence, and will draft and advocate for a law on sexual harassment.
Research activities and media campaigns will feed into a strategy to
generate community support and political will for the passage of the
new laws. The CEDAW Watch Network Centre will conduct meetings and workshops
with political parties and legislators, to raise their awareness on
domestic violence and sexual harassment.
Duration: 2 years

Reducing VAW
by Amending the Criminal Law on Sexual Offences: This project aims
to create a legislative and social environment that prevents gender-based
violence. The Thailand Law Institute will revise a draft amendment to
the Penal Code related to marital rape, which is not illegal under current
Thai law.
Duration: one year

Working together for the Elimination Of Violence Against Women:
The Department of Rights and the All China Women's Federation will develop
a policy recommendation on improving institutional mechanisms to work
on EVAW at provincial and local levels. They will work with men in goverments
and communities on ending violence against women. They will also develop
a set of training modules on CEDAW and women's human rights, targeting
men, and a video on the campaign to be distributed among Chinese TV
networks.
Duration: 18 months

Banteay Srei
|
VAW
Radio Drama: The Cambodian NGO, Banteay Srei will develop, produce
and broadcast a radio play featuring a Cambodian female heroine who
tackles issues of VAW, particularly domestic violence, trafficking,
and rape. The radio drama will focus not only on women's rights and
human rights but will also challenge and question the violation of women's
rights within Cambodia. The drama will also promote Cambodia's new Domestic
Violence bill and publicize what protections are contained in the bill,
why they are important and how Cambodian men and women will benefit
from the bill if it is passed. The drama will target rural women.
Duration: 12 months

Lao PDR

Lao Women's Union

Capacity
Building of Lao Women's Union ability to provide services to survivors
of VAW: this project will assist the LWU to put in place infrastructure
to cope with domestic violence, including developing the LWUs capacity
in provision of services and in implementing the domestic violence law,
once it comes into being. In July 2002, LWU was given responsibility
by the Lao PDR National Assembly to take up the national response to
violence against women, including preparing draft bills on VAW such
as a domestic violence bill. This project will pilot a community based
VAW counseling drop-in service to be managed by the LWU. It will be
the first such centre to be established in Lao PDR.
Duration: 12 months
