Background
"Violence against women is an
obstacle to the achievement of the objectives of equality, development
and peace. Violence against women both violates and impairs or nullifies
the enjoyment by women of their human rights and fundamental freedoms" :
Beijing Platform for
Action.
Violence against women and girls is a
major problem in most of East and South East Asia, with many
institutional, legal and cultural obstacles to its elimination. This
violence is a violation of women's human rights.
The range of violence against women and
girls is devastating, occurring quite literally from womb to tomb. It
includes: abortion of female babies (pre natal sex selection), killing of
female infants (female infanticide), female genital mutilation, sexual
harassment in schools and at work, trafficking, forced prostitution,
dowry-related violence, domestic violence, and marital rape. Violence
against women and girls happens in every country and in every segment of
society, regardless of class, ethnicity, or culture.

EVAW Campaign 2000
 |
Two projects were funded under this
programme.
- Year 2000 marked the 10th
anniversary of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign to Eliminate
Violence Against Women. To focus on this important event,
UNIFEM funded organizations from eight countries to conduct
activities during November and December 2000 covering the 16 days
of activism campaign. The activities included media campaigns,
workshops, television shows and poster campaigns.
- UNIFEM support to a
Thai TV Hotline call-in TV programme in 2000 provided
an opportunity to explore the potential for effective and
innovative programming to raise public awareness on VAW while at
the same time providing service in the form of counselling, to
survivors.

EVAW Campaign 1998
 |
UNIFEM devoted 1998, the 50th
Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to
highlighting and promoting women's human rights. Early in the year
we initiated a Global Campaign to eliminate violence against women.
As part of the world-wide campaign, the East and South East Asia
Regional Office promoted an effective and popular Asia-Pacific
Campaign. It's aim was to transform public attitudes, policies,
practices and legislation to ensure a life free of violence for
women and girls in the Asia-Pacific Region.
We have retained
details
of the Asia-Pacific Campaign to record the successful
activities, and to preserve links to many organisations that are
working in the VAW area.

There are several other resources
related to EVAW on this site:
In addition, in
response to popular demand, in November 2001 UNIFEM resumed
the
End-Violence Working Group which is a virtual community of over
2,500 people in 120+ countries, communicating through an email list.
The E&SEA region has had some of the most enthusiastic participants.
End-violence was a driving force for UNIFEM's global
Videoconference, "A World Free of Violence Against Women."
End-violence also fed into the Beijing +5 Review Process, and into
reports of UNIFEM and other UN agencies including that of the
Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women. |
