In 1990 UNIFEM supported the establishment of the Gender and Development Research Institute (GDRI), a private non-profit organisation active in policy research and policy advocacy on issues that affect Thai women’s lives and welfare. GDRI is the research arm of the Association for the Promotion of the Status of Women.

• policies on women’s concerns
• women local leaders
• women as agents of change, and
• violence against women

GDRI also has several regular annual projects, including:

• the photo contest “Women and Work”, and
• The Outstanding Women Award
