UNIFEM awards Thai men
for role in ending violence - 7 November 2003
United Nations,
Bangkok –
The United Nations
Development Fund for Women awarded seven men for their contributions to
ending violence against women yesterday at a ceremony held at the
Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.
Each year the
Ministry and its Office of Women’s Affairs and Family Development holds
an event to publicize the international campaign, “16 Days of Activism
Against Gender Violence,” which begins on November 25.
This
year, UNIFEM’s regional programme on Eliminating Violence Against Women
recognized the seven men, along with five hospitals and one provincial
police protection center for their outstanding commitment and
contributions to ending violence.
The seven men
awarded were Minister Anurak Chureemas, Mr Wallop Tangkananurak, Mr
Jaran Pukditanakul, Mr Weerasak Kowsurat, Dr Weraphan Suphanchaimat, Mr
Pimuk Simaroj, and United Nations Resident Coordinator Mr J.K. Robert
England.
Each man received
an engraved plaque, awarded by UNIFEM Regional Programme Director Ms
Lucita Lazo.
The other awards
went to the Chumphonkhetudomsakdi Hospital, for its innovative One Stop
Center for victims of violence, along with the Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen,
Saraburi and Rayong hospitals. The final award went to the Songkhla
Provincial Police Protection Center for Children, Youth and Women.
The UNIFEM East and Southeast
Asia Regional Office supports the 16 Days Campaign and other EVAW activities in
eight countries,
including Thailand.
In 1999, the
United Nations officially recognized November 25 as the International
Day Against Violence Against Women. The date was first chosen in 1981 in
South America, to commemorate the 1960 assassination of three sisters by
the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.
This year, the 16
Days Campaign in Thailand will be marked by a government and NGO seminar
to review of the progress made since the 1993 Vienna Declaration and
Platform of Action on gender-based violence.
The UNIFEM Regional Programme on Eliminating Violence Against Women
works in seven countries to raise awareness, strengthen legislation,
build capacity and support innovative pilot models to stop gender-based
violence. For more please see the
EVAW programme page.
