Domestic violence
conference to forge new regional alliances - 28 November 2003
United Nations,
Bangkok – The United Nations Development Fund for
Women along with Forum Asia is holding a major regional workshop on
domestic violence legislation next week in Bangkok.
UNIFEM runs a
regional programme ‘Eliminating Violence Against Women,’ that for the
past three years has focused on advocating for domestic violence
legislation in Asian countries, as well as developing innovative pilot
models to treat and prevent the problem of domestic violence.
The three day
workshop, to be held December 1-3 at the Prince Palace Hotel in Bangkok,
will allow participants from 11 countries to share their experiences in
drafting and passing domestic violence legislation. The main goal of the
workshop will be to develop a regional EVAW network that will allow
national organizations to advocate more effectively on the issue of
domestic violence, and other forms of gender-based violence.
Conference updates
will be available each day, highlighting the presentation made by
country representatives. For further information on the conference
please contact information officer Michael
Gray, or the EVAW programme assistant,
Yukiko Kumashiro.
The UNIFEM Regional Programme on Eliminating Violence Against Women
works in seven countries to raise awareness, strengthen legislation,
build capacity and support innovative pilot models to stop gender-based
violence. For more please see the
EVAW programme page.
