International Women's Day Celebration at the National Human Right Commission, Thailand (NHRC)

 

10 March 2006 The National Human Right Commission of Thailand (supported by UNIFEM) is organizing activities in celebration of International Women’s day on  at the NHRC, half day event.

It comprises 2 sub- activities:

a) Panel discussion on “State Obligation on Gender Equality”. It is aimed at raising awareness on discriminatory laws which still exists and is not compliant to CEDAW and proposing necessary action  towards legal changes. The discussion will focus on discriminatory laws, policies and practices and its impact on women in the 3 southern provinces, particularly from State violence, domestic violence, trafficking and reproductive health conditions. Recommendations for law amendment and  temporary special measures and appropriate measures will be discussed. The participants, totaling 200 include Chief Gender Equality Officers from key line ministries, women’s NGOs and CSOs at the national and grassroots levels, and media.

b) Awarding ceremony for the Outstanding Women’s Human Rights Defenders. It is aimed at raising awareness on women’s roles and contribution to the wider society, not for themselves, not the womens’ group but the general public which requires greater time, effort and sacrifice than their male counterpart in order to proof to the society as being women.  This awarding ceremony is the second year of the NHRC.
