Focus Areas

UNIFEM has been highlighting and addressing three main issues through its response in Aceh

  1. Leadership and Capacity Building of Women Organizations and Networks: Supporting local women's leadership as well as the mobilization of women's networks to give them a voice in the relief and recovery efforts , while supporting them financially to quickly respond to women's needs, including mobilizing local women to lead the healing process
  2. Livelihoods and Economic Recovery: Helping revive and revitalize women's livelihoods , including the restoration of production processes and supply chains -many of which are traditionally maintained by local women; strengthening market links and helping women access reconstruction assistance as well as to explore new livelihood opportunities. Particular attention is given to women-headed households and widows
  3. Advocacy and Protection: Working in collaboration with other UN agencies, the provincial Government, and women's networks to develop the capacity of women's groups to advocate for and to protect women from violation of their rights in the relief and recovery period and beyond . This includes developing tools for early warning for women, particularly in the reality of post-disaster and ongoing conflict

UNIFEM in Aceh gives particular attention to women-headed households and widows in helping them to revitalize their livelihoods
