This year’s theme to
celebrate the 95th Anniversary of the International Women Day is
Working Together for a Society Without Violence. MOWA’s strategy,
Neary Rattanak II, aims at changing attitude in society to address
discrimination, securing women’s rights, and creating more
opportunity for women to access health services, education,
vocational skills, access to economic opportunity, and protection
under the laws to prevent abuse in various forms such as
trafficking, violence and rape. MOWA is also working to increase
women’s participation in decision making at national and local
levels.
Prime Minister Hun Sen,
made a strong commitment in "integrating gender in the
government's new strategic development plan to be released in
September 2005" and underscored the need to pass the Domestic
Violence Act. The Prime Minister also mentioned that "it is every
institution’s priority to integrate gender into their policies and
plans, and it should not only be the role of the Ministry of Women
Affairs."
Statements supporting
gendered policies and actions were also issued from key ministries
such as Health, Education, Justice, and Commerce.
An exhibition by the
different institutions also was part of the International Women’s
Day event. The UNDP-UNIFEM Gender and Millennium Project was
represented in the SILAKA booth and gave out materials and briefed
the participants on the project.
